Where Icescapes May Fade is a piece inspired by the glaciers of South West and and their vulnerability to climate change. It also comes from a series of trips I have taken to South Westland where I stopped to admire Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Every time I visit the glaciers I am immediately captivated by their luminescent nature. These icescapes in South Westland also contrast a very green landscape. One thing that always fascinated me about glaciers is their ability to grow and retreat. However, in recent years this retreating has become more prominent than the growing. Franz Josef was once able to be visited up close in the early 2000s, and now in 2024, it needs to be visited by helicopter to see it. This fragile and fading nature of the icescape is what is captured in this piece.
