Te Tauraka Waka a Māui tells the story of Estella's marae. It starts with Māui and his peers sailing on the Moana, someone cries out “He Whenua He Whenua!” to which Māui replies “It is a mirage of the sea” but he was mistaken and discovered Mahitahi and defeated two taniwha so that future generations could land at Mahitahi safely. Carvings of this story can be found on our Marae in Bruce Bay, South Westland.
