Hinehukatere is inspired by the story from my hapū. Hinehukatere loved to climb the mountains and was a fearless girl. One day, she persuaded her lover, Wawe, to go climbing in the mountains. They climbed too high and an avalanche sweeps Wawe to his death. Hinehukatere was so grief stricken that her tears flowed down the mountainside and formed glaciers. This is how Kā Roimata o Hinehukatere (Franz Josef) got it's name.
